"While retail sales will start in Hong Kong and Taiwan, Komodo plans to launch Steam Deck at retail in Japan and South Korea in the future." - Komodo
What does this mean for locations like the US and Europe? If the sales go well and reception is high, we could see Valve partner with other stores to place their Steam Decks in a more public view of less likely shoppers to follow Steam or PC gaming.
Valve partnered with stores to sell their Steam Machine, which ended poorly. Hopefully, Valve kept up those relations and didn't scare them off by placing future products like the Steam Deck.
Why does this matter?
Getting more Steam Decks into the hands of the public will do two things. One, it will help grow the community, so there are more modders, developers, and content interest in the device, which means we get more. Two, PC becomes a bigger platform and tempts devs to release more on the PC, like the Last of Us Part 1, which also means more games for the PC.
